The General Authority of Civil Aviation in Saudi Arabia will hold a regional conference in Jeddah on Monday to talk about satellite-enabled search and rescue operations.

Teams from search and rescue facilities in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Algeria, Nigeria, and Togo will participate in training workshops during the four-day meeting, which is scheduled for February 24–27.

The International Cospas-Sarsat Programme, or Cospas-Sarsat, established satellite search tools for people, ships, and airplanes, and Saudi Arabia has been at the forefront of rescue efforts in the region.

As part of the Cospas-Sarsat effort, which was started in 1979 by the US, Canada, France, and the former Soviet Union, the Kingdom was among the first nations in the Middle East to use satellite technology for rescue operations.

The conference will be attended by representatives of the Saudi Arabian Mission Control Center as well as rescue mission authorities such the Air Force, the Border Guards, and the security services of the Ministry of Interior.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, participants will talk about the operational and technical facets of using satellites to transmit distress case alerts as well as elements of regional search and rescue agency collaboration.
